Tuesday marks National Voter Registration Day, and both Syracuse University and city residents alike can register to vote in New York state.

On Nov. 4, the city of Syracuse will see two major elections: the race for the city’s next mayor, and two seats for common councilor at-large.

The Daily Orange has broken down how to register to vote in the city or in your home state.

How to register to vote

To register to vote in New York state, students and residents can register online or pick up a physical voter registration form from the local county clerk’s office, post office or public library. Forms are available on SU’s campus at Bird Library, the Schine Student Center and the Goldstein Student Center.

New York residents can also register to vote online on the New York Department of Motor Vehicles website using DMV-issued drivers license, permit or non-driver ID of identification.

The state’s voter registration deadline is Oct. 25. Residents can register to vote as a Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Working Families, “no party” or independent voter.

SU students living in Syracuse during the academic year can still register in New York state using their campus or local address. However, students registered to vote in their home state must cancel their hometown registration before registering in New York state.

Students living in the city who wish to vote in their home state should request an absentee mail-in ballot. Every state has different deadlines and procedures for receiving a mail-in ballot.

Every state deadline can be found at vote.org.

After registering, a voter registration card will be mailed a few weeks later.

Students at SU can also visit the Office of Government and Community Relations for help on voter registration, Chief Student Experience Officer Allen Groves said in Tuesday campus-wide email.

Where to vote in Syracuse

On election day, students can vote at two polling locations on SU’s campus: Huntington Hall and the Goldstein Student Center, which is determined by address.

Other polling locations can be found on the New York State Board of Elections’ website.

There are 45 polling locations throughout the city. A list of each location can be found on the Onondaga County Board of Elections website.

What’s on the ballot

The Syracuse mayoral race is currently headed by 4 candidates — Syracuse Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens on the Democratic ticket alongside local attorney Thomas Babilon, running as a Republican. Alfonso Davis and Tim Rudd are running as independents.

The winning candidate will replace incumbent Independent Mayor Ben Walsh, who was Independent. The candidates will come together for the second time during a forum hosted by Central Current on Oct. 23.

Two common councilor seats are also open as Democrats Rasheada Caldwell and Amir Gethers end their terms. While Gethers is not running again, Caldwell and fellow democrat Hanah Ehrenreich are running for the seats uncontested.

Election day is Nov. 4. Early voting will begin Oct. 25 through Nov. 2.
