Following reports of an incident at Syracuse University’s Zeta Beta Tau fraternity Tuesday night, two students are currently facing a Community Standards investigation and could also face antisemitic hate crime charges pending the outcome of an investigation.
As members were eating dinner together in celebration of the first night of Rosh Hashanah, an SU student reportedly entered ZBT, a historically Jewish fraternity, at around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The student threw meat, believed to be pork, on the floor, Chief Student Experience Officer Allen Groves said in a campus-wide email.
Local authorities will decide on specific criminal charges in the coming days, the email states, including whether to charge it as an antisemitic hate crime.
The student, who is not a member of the fraternity, fled in a car driven by another student. Both were “quickly apprehended” by SU’s Department of Public Safety and taken into custody by the Syracuse Police Department, Groves wrote.
“Tonight’s incident as reported to us is abhorrent, shocking to the conscience and violates our core value of being a place that is truly welcoming to all,” Groves wrote in the email. “It will not be tolerated at Syracuse University.”
The involved students have also been referred to Community Standards and, pending the outcome of an investigation, will face “appropriate disciplinary action.”
