Syracuse field hockey climbed one spot in the Week 4 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll Tuesday, rising to No. 5. The Orange won back-to-back games over the weekend, improving to 8-2 on the season after dropping their first two games of Atlantic Coast Conference play.
SU downed then-No. 7 Duke 1-0 on Friday before stunning then-No. 20 Penn State with a 3-2 comeback win Sunday, scoring two goals in the final 90 seconds. The Blue Devils dropped to No. 9 in the poll while the Nittany Lions fell out of the rankings.
The Orange earned 165 points in the poll, just two points ahead of No. 6 Liberty and 27 behind No. 4 Harvard. SU didn’t receive any first-place votes. Northwestern remained at No. 1 with 220 points, followed by No. 2 Virginia (207), No. 3 North Carolina (195), Harvard (192) and Syracuse.
SU was one of six ACCC teams ranked in the poll, joined by Virginia, North Carolina, No. 7 Wake Forest, Duke and No. 18 Louisville.
The Orange opened the year ranked No. 11 after their season ended last year with a 1-0 defeat to then-No. 10 Harvard in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
