In a landslide race, Sharon Owens was elected mayor of Syracuse, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.
Owens, the city’s deputy mayor under current Mayor Ben Walsh, is the second woman and first Black mayor-elect in Syracuse. She ran as a Democrat and member of the Working Families Party.
As of 11:09 p.m., the deputy mayor won by an overwhelming margin, earning 11,130 votes to Republican Thomas Babilon’s 2,726, and independents Alfonso Davis and Tim Rudd’s 604 and 487, respectively.
Since announcing her campaign in 2024, Owens ran on a platform focused on public safety, affordable housing and economic growth.
As a board chair of Blueprint 15, a Syracuse nonprofit working to revitalize the East Adams neighborhood, Owens champions “thriving neighborhoods” and fighting the city’s lead crisis. She’s also promoted building an inclusive economy that supports LGBTQ+ and minority-owned businesses.
Owens will begin her position on Jan. 1.
