Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country competed in the NCAA Regionals at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds in New Hampshire. The top two teams in each event automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships.
The women’s team competed first in the 6K. Sophomore Selma Anderson was its top performer, finishing in fourth with a time of 19:55.3. Redshirt senior Madeline Heintz finished in 14th with a time of 20:20.8. Fellow redshirt senior Emma Eastman placed 30th with a time of 20:39.4. Nyah Hernandez placed just behind her in 31st. Sophomore Masie Burns came in 47th, freshman Carmen Luisi placed 51st while sophomore Jayden Harberts rounded out SU in 64th.
The women’s team finished fourth in its event behind Boston College, Providence and Army. Its only hope at clinching its fifth consecutive appearance in the championships is to be chosen for one of the 14 at-large bids.
The men’s team competed in the 10K. Redshirt senior Peter Walsdorf finished in second and had the Orange’s best time. Four seconds behind him was sophomore Benne Anderson, who finished in sixth at 29:21.5. In seventh was junior Matthew Neill, in eighth was senior Assaf Harari and in ninth was senior Sam Lawler. Syracuse won the event for the fourth time in the last five years.
The men’s team automatically qualified for its 17th straight NCAA Championship. It’ll compete for the final time on Nov. 22 in Columbia, Missouri. The fate of the women’s team will be decided Saturday by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Subcommittee.
