Syracuse freshman quarterback Luke Carney is entering the transfer portal after one season with the program, he announced on social media Wednesday night.

Carney, a former three-star recruit from Texas, is the second quarterback to transfer from SU this portal cycle, following Jakhari Williams. Carney played in four games this past season, preserving his redshirt status, and will have four years of collegiate eligibility remaining.

After the Orange’s Week 1 starting quarterback Steve Angeli suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during a win over Clemson on Sept. 20, Carney became a part of Syracuse’s quarterback musical chairs that ensued for the rest of the year.

Along with LSU transfer Rickie Collins and true freshman walk-on Joe Filardi, Carney earned a few opportunities to provide a spark to an Orange offense that was lost for the final eight games of the season.

In four appearances, none of which were starts, Carney tallied 10 carries for 28 rushing yards and a touchdown, while completing 5-of-7 passes for 22 yards through the air. Whenever he was under center, Syracuse mostly handed off or used Carney in the zone-read game. He rarely got a chance to throw the ball downfield.

Collins started the first three games in the aftermath of Angeli’s injury, but after head coach Fran Brown benched Collins heading into SU’s Oct. 31 game against UNC, he chose the walk-on Filardi to start games versus UNC, Notre Dame and Boston College at the end of the season. Carney was Syracuse’s lone quarterback not to earn a starting opportunity.

Carney committed to SU as a pretty highly-touted quarterback recruit. In high school, he led Dallas Christian High School football team to four straight Texas state titles, becoming the only quarterback in the state’s history to ever do so.

Now, Carney is searching for his next destination after one year in central New York.
