After a month-long break, Syracuse track and field traveled to Ithaca Saturday to compete in the Southern Tier Invitational. In the event, the Orange secured four podiums and two wins across seven events.
Leading the charge for the women were seniors Tia Outlaw in the women’s 60-meter hurdles and Peyton Rollins in the women’s 60-meter. Outlaw qualified highest in the first round at 8.47 seconds and won the race with an improved time of 8.34. Freshman Ivana Richards finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 9.21 seconds.
Rollins also ran a personal best time of 7.64 in her first-place finish in the women’s 60-meter. Rollins qualified highest as well, being the only Orange runner to make it to the final race.
The men found similar success in the 60-meter hurdles, with sophomores Isaiah Hayes and Tawakal Omar qualifying in second and third, respectively. Hayes ran an indoor personal record of 8.12 seconds in qualifying, while Omar ran an 8.30 in the first round.
Despite a good first round, only Hayes would cross the line in the final race, finishing in second. Omar received a DNF in the final race.
The women continued to find success in the 300-meter, with freshman Nicea Jones putting up a time of 39.80 seconds to place second and give Syracuse its fourth podium of the day.
The Orange had two other top-10 finishers in the 300 Saturday. Senior Shayla Ford ran a personal best of 41.03, exactly 1.5 seconds faster than her previous fastest, to place sixth, and freshman Emeline Clark placed ninth (41.75 seconds).
Another notable finish was sophomore Mia Hernandez, who placed 11th and also secured a personal record in the women’s 300-meter at 42.75 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than her previous best.
Syracuse will compete in two meets on Jan. 17, with some athletes racing in the Nittany Lion Challenge in University Park, Pennsylvania, and some returning to Ithaca to run in the Upstate Challenge.
