Syracuse has hired Sean Ryan as its quarterbacks coach, the program announced Friday. Ryan has almost three decades worth of coaching experience, including 18 in the NFL, most recently spending time with the Miami Dolphins as a senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach.
Ryan began his NFL coaching career with the New York Giants in 2007 as an offensive quality control coach. Since 1999, he bounced around various college programs like Harvard, Colgate, Boston College, UAlbany and Columbia. After joining the Giants’ staff, he held various roles with the organization, until leaving in 2015.
The 53-year old remained in the NFL, coaching with the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers and Dolphins. In 2023, he was an offensive analyst at South Carolina, but that was his first college experience in 17 years. He once again will be with a collegiate program and will be tasked with getting the best out of quarterback Steve Angeli.
Outside of Angeli, Syracuse rebuilt its quarterback room this offseason. Rickie Collins, Luke Carney and Jakhari Williams all entered the transfer portal. SU recently added Amari Odom (Kennesaw State) and Danny Lauter (Georgetown), to provide cover for Angeli if he were to go down again. Last season, Angeli thrived in four games under quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile.
The two had a strong relationship due to Campanile’s brother Vito Campanile coaching Angeli at Bergen Catholic High School (New Jersey). However, once SU turned to Rickie Collins in wake of Angeli’s torn Achilles, everything went downhill.
Amid a five-game losing streak, Campanile was moved to tight ends coach, with Michael Johnson taking over. Then in December, Campanile took the offensive coordinator job at UConn under new head coach Jason Candle.
With Ryan’s NFL experience, he’ll collaborate with offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon as Syracuse looks to recapture its magic from the first four games of 2025 next season.
