Another weekend, another school record for Senior Elijah Mallard. Last weekend, it was in the men’s indoor 300-meter. This weekend, it’s the indoor 400. Finishing with a time of 46:98 seconds, he beat the mark he set back in 2023 by nearly 0.4 seconds.
Mallard’s win was one of six over the weekend as Syracuse’s men’s and women’s teams split up and competed at two separate indoor meets. The Orange sent runners to the Nittany Lion Challenge, hosted by Penn State, and Cornell’s Upstate Challenge. Sprinters and hurdlers, like Mallard, took the trip to Happy Valley, while the distance runners bused out to Ithaca.
At Penn State, sophomore Jamir Brown also had a personal best. With a time of 7.63, the transfer took first in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. His teammate, Isaiah Hayes, came in at 8.11, placing third.
In the women’s 60-meter sprint, freshman Indie Wallace-Persaud took gold with a time of 7.43.
Nicea Jones was the second freshman to win an event at the meet. Jones took care of business in the women’s 400-meter race with a time of 55.78. Junior Shayla Ford followed close behind, coming in at 57.40 and taking second.
At Cornell, it was the distance team’s first time racing since the SU’s season opener in early December. In the women’s one-mile, senior Emma Eastman dominated with a time of 4:52.05. While no other Orange racers placed on the podium, finishers four through 11 were all from Syracuse.
On the men’s side, sophomore Drew Zundell won the mile with a personal best of 4:03.54. Connor Ackley finished second to give the Orange a 1-2 finish.
Next weekend, the Orange are back in action at the Orange and Purple Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina.
