Syracuse University officials and its Parking and Transportation Services team presented information about parking on and off campus during the Student Government Association’s regular Monday meeting.

SU’s Vice President and Chief Campus Facilities Officer Pete Sala introduced resources available through Parking and Transportation services, ranging from weekly grocery and safety shuttles to parking lots and garages around SU.

“It’s been amazing that over the last few years that we’ve made enough changes where we’re not hearing the complaints that we used to about transportation,” Sala said.

After the presentation, the floor was opened for assembly members to voice questions and concerns. Among student concerns were the price of parking on university grounds and city parking tickets issued to SU students.

Asher Gonzalez, the assembly’s vice president of university affairs, asked for clarification regarding the university and city’s collaboration on parking tickets during snow storms. He said his friends had been ticketed, despite their cars being trapped from the latest snow storm.

Sala said Parking and Transportation is currently collaborating with the city to discuss the issue, but as for affordability of parking, there is no current solution.

“I don’t see us ever having free parking, we need to do a better job to make it affordable, we’re paying attention,” Sala said. “A more affordable rate, a lower rate, those are things we are working on.”

The assembly also went over their committee presentations, including the event agenda. Their largest upcoming event, passed yesterday, is an SGA-organized Super Bowl watch party at Schine Student Center this upcoming Sunday, Speaker Pro Tempore Max Lachut said.

After members discussed the upcoming committee, they addressed the remaining semester budget of $45,080, available for registered student organization’s events. Lachut said this leaves the assembly on track for the semester.

The meeting was adjourned early. The assembly could not begin voting on bills because they did not meet the necessary quorum, or attendance, for voting.

Members said voting would take place virtually Monday night following the end of the meeting.
