Syracuse University aims to provide “every future sophomore” with housing on SU’s main campus, Vice President and Chief Campus Facilities Officer Pete Sala said during a Thursday interview with NewsChannel 9 WSYR.
Sala discussed construction updates to SU’s ongoing dormitory and hotel projects with WSYR. The dorm construction plans are part of SU’s Campus Framework, a 20-year guide for SU’s physical campus development.
The university is building two new residence halls and a dining center at Waverly and Comstock Avenue. A third residence hall is under construction at 544 University Place.
Additionally, SU has partnered with Graduate by Hilton to build an on-campus hotel at the corner of Harrison Street, across from the University Avenue garage.
The heightened construction activity, which has caused several road closures and noise concerns from students, will continue through the spring semester.
“I would think by the end of this month and early March you’ll see another tower crane going up, then shortly after that you’ll see another tower crane go up at the hotel,” Sala told NewsChannel 9.

Sala described the new dorms as “modern,” and said they’d mostly consist of quad and triple dorms, rather than doubles and singles. The new dorm rooms will also include air conditioning units, Sala said.
Additionally, Sala said the three new residence halls will allow the university to put the entire sophomore class on SU’s main campus — many of whom currently live in apartments on South Campus. The new dormitory at 544 University Place will house approximately 570 students.
“That’s very important for us for retention purposes and the student experience,” Sala said. “The students tell us they want to be on the main campus.”
The university has not yet said when the three projects will be completed. However, the hotel is set to be open fall of 2027.
“All three projects are going very, very well…it’s a really exciting time for the university and it’s just great for our students,” Sala said.
