A valid SUID card will now be required to enter certain buildings at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, Newhouse Dean Mark Lodato wrote in a Friday email to Newhouse students.

The new access protocol will begin March 2, following the Department of Public Safety’s removal of a trespasser from Newhouse 3 Tuesday. Lodato confirmed the trespasser was the same individual removed from Newhouse on Jan. 30.

“(DPS) is working closely with local law enforcement to address this matter and will continue to engage with this person should he return to campus,” Lodato wrote. “As always, if you have questions about your safety or if you observe anything concerning, please contact DPS immediately.”

Those who want to enter Newhouse 2 and 3 will need to present their SUID at the buildings’ doors facing Waverly Ave., the Food.com entrance facing the Schine Student Center and the Newhouse 3 entrance facing the Einhorn Family Walk, Lodato wrote.

The doors facing the Newhouse Family Plaza will also be locked.

Newhouse 1’s campus-facing entrance via the plaza will remain open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but locked outside of those hours, according to the email.

The school planned to implement the security measures before Tuesday’s incident, Lodato wrote. SU has implemented similar protocols at the Marley Education Center, Dineen Hall and Huntington Hall.

“I know recent incidents have created concern for some. Know that the safety and well-being of our community is my top priority,” Lodato wrote. “I recognize these changes may require some adjustment. I appreciate your cooperation, and as always, welcome your feedback.”
