Onondaga County Legislator Maurice Brown announced a run for the New York State Assembly Friday. His campaign centers around affordability, housing and safety in central New York, according to a Friday release.
Brown’s campaign will focus on affordable housing and stronger tenant protections, lowering utility costs, raising wages to match the cost of living and investing in prevention-based public safety strategies. With this, he emphasizes tax fairness as “essential” to funding long-term solutions, according to the release.
“The wealthiest corporations and the top earners in our state are not paying their fair share,” Brown wrote in the release. “If we want universal childcare, if we want to pass the New York Health Act, and if we want to fully fund the services families rely on, then we must require those at the top to contribute more. We cannot keep asking working families to carry the burden.”
Brown has served as county legislator for Onondaga County’s 15th district since November 2023. He is part of the Democratic and Working Families Party, and is an Onondaga Community College and Syracuse University alum.
Brown’s candidacy for state assembly comes after a lack of “stronger” results from Albany, according to the release — calling out sitting assemblyman William Magnarelli, who has represented Syracuse for over 25 years.
Voting for the Democratic Primary will be held June 23. Early voting begins June 13.
“Challenging the status quo is never easy,” Brown wrote. “But our community deserves leadership focused on real results.”
