A second straight slate of Syracuse softball games has been canceled. SU was set to play another doubleheader against UAlbany at 12:30 p.m. and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at 5:30 p.m., but both games were again canceled due to inclement weather.
Syracuse’s schedule still lists its meeting with Morgan State Sunday at 10 a.m. Barring any weather cancellations, it will be the Orange’s last chance at a tune-up before their Atlantic Coast Conference gauntlet gets underway.
Syracuse is 10-6 this season through early-season tournament play, but its conference schedule has consistently spoiled previous campaigns. Last season, SU breezed through tournament play with a 16-3 record. But when the conference schedule started, it lost 19 of its next 30, failing to qualify for the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2015.
Roughly 30% of Syracuse’s scheduled games being canceled thus far won’t do the Orange any favors in preparing for their upcoming strenuous stretch. SU’s first two ACC series are against No. 10 Florida State and No. 20 Virginia.
It’s the privilege of playing in the ACC. Five ACC teams are ranked in the top 25, while three additional squads received votes in USA Softball’s Week 4 Top 25 Poll.
Syracuse’s earlier meetings against ranked teams didn’t end pretty for the Orange. They also didn’t end in the seventh inning, either. Two of SU’s three mercy-rule losses this season were to squads with numbers before their names — No. 3 Texas and No. 24 South Carolina. The combined score of those games was 29-2.
