Spectrum News and Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications announced a partnership that will produce student-created content, according to a Tuesday release.

The partnership will specialize in hands-on experience in journalism and media production for Newhouse students, the release states.

Beginning in fall 2026, student journalism will be published on Spectrum’s website, mobile app and social media channels, according to the release. Students will work on local news coverage, an issues-based magazine show for Spectrum networks and also contribute to the Syracuse station’s daily on-air sports coverage.

Additionally, outside of its Syracuse station, Spectrum will place students in newsroom internships across the country. Advanced producing classes and a jointly led investigative journalism course will also be available for the 2026-27 school year, according to the release.

By including student work on Spectrum News, viewers will have a “unique look” at the next generation’s perspective on current issues and enhance the outlet’s coverage, the release states.

“This collaboration, which places our students alongside some of the best journalists in the business while reporting for real audiences, is exactly the kind of transformative opportunity that defines Newhouse’s legacy of excellence in journalism education,” Newhouse Dean Mark Lodato said in the release.

A field study program will also be available, allowing students to report on the 2026 midterms from Washington, D.C., the 2026 Dodgers season and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“We’re supporting students as they embark on their journalism careers and providing a pathway to create a sustainable future for local news, supported by these talented emerging reporters,” Mike Bair, executive vice president of Spectrum Networks, said in the release.

Newhouse and Spectrum will host an on campus kick off event for the program from March 26 to the 27, which includes a reception, discussion panel on the future of local journalism and professional development sessions conducted by Spectrum News journalists and leaders.
