Syracuse track and field’s Peter Walsdorf set a new school record in the 10,000-meter event at the Stanford Invitational Friday. The Orange also won eight of the 10 events they competed in at the Cortland Red Dragon Open Friday.
Walsdorf, the senior, crossed the line in 28:14.58, good for 21st place. It’s his second time setting a school record without taking the win. Back in February, he set the program’s best time in the indoor 5,000-meter at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
At Cortland, the Orange’s domination began with the men’s 1,500, where they took the top two spots. Omar Alsaidi took gold, finishing in 4:00.08 seconds. His teammate, Asher Danielson, was 0.22 seconds behind him. On the women’s side in the same event, Luise Hiltzbleck, a freshman from Germany, notched her first-ever collegiate win, coming in at 4:39.85.
SU’s hurdlers strung together impressive results. Emeline Clark showed her versatility, earning gold in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. She finished with a time of 14.15 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 1:04.23 in the 400, where her teammate Billie Frazier came in second place.
For the men’s 400-meter hurdles, Elijah Mallard handily finished first, setting a personal record with a time of 51.1 seconds in the process. The next closest racer was more than four and a half seconds behind him. Isaiah Hayes continued the strong showing, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.09 seconds.
For the women’s sprinters, Shayla Ford found success at the Red Dragon Open for the second year in a row. In back-to-back years, she won the 400-meter sprint. Esther Ganda took first place in the open 200. It was the first time Ganda raced in the event in college. Ganda also was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash.
Syracuse is back in action next weekend when the team splits up again. On Friday, one squad heads out to the Friar Invitational in Providence while another travels south to Durham for the Duke Invitational.
