Syracuse guard Camdyn Nelson intends to enter the transfer portal, she announced on Instagram Sunday. Nelson is the fifth SU player to announce their intention to transfer away, following forward Justus Fitzgerald, guard Sophie Burrows, guard Madeline Potts and wing Shy Hawkins.
Nelson entered her freshman season at Syracuse with significant expectations to remedy its point guard woes from the previous season. She concluded her high school career at St. Luke’s School (Connecticut) by taking home Gatorade Connecticut Player of the Year honors as a senior and was rated as a four-star point guard prospect in the class of 2025.
She had a chance to meet those expectations early on, picking up starts at point guard in SU’s first three contests against Stony Brook, UAlbany and Wagner. But she began her Syracuse career by shooting just 2-for-12 across those three games — scoring six points — and never returned to the starting lineup.
Nelson didn’t register double-digit minute totals in any of the Orange’s Atlantic Coast Conference matchups. She finished her freshman season averaging 9.1 minutes and 1.4 points per game across her 19 appearances.
With Nelson’s departure, whatever backcourt depth SU had is practically nonexistent. As of right now, the only guards that remain on the Orange’s roster are Angelica Velez and Olivia Schmitt, while Dominique Darius is trying to secure a waiver for another year of eligibility.
