Former Siena guard Gavin Doty has transferred to Syracuse, he announced on social media Tuesday. Doty starred for Gerry McNamara with the Saints over the past two seasons and practically revealed his plans after they fell to Duke in the NCAA Tournament.

“I plan on playing for G-Mac through my whole career,” Doty said on March 19.

Doty’s move to Syracuse reunites him with McNamara and returns him home. Doty is a native of Fulton, New York, and was a two-time Salt City Athletic Conference Empire Division Player of the Year. He played at the Phelps School in Pennsylvania before returning to Fulton and finishing his career at G. Ray Bodley High School.

In his freshman year at Siena, Doty started 17 games throughout the 2024-25 season while averaging 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He tallied six double-doubles and shot 80.2% from the free throw line.

His role increased in his sophomore campaign, as he powered the Saints through a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship and March Madness appearance. The 6-foot-5 guard led Siena with an average of 18.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game on the year. He scored 21 points against No. 1 seed Duke in the NCAA Tournament First Round, and nearly pulled off a miraculous upset as a No. 16 seed.

“Gavin Doty is probably as close to me as anybody I’ve ever (met),” McNamara said after the MAAC Championship. “In terms of like, he’s a psycho. He’s an absolute maniac competitor.”

Doty announced his plans to enter the transfer portal on March 25. McNamara was reported to be finalizing a deal with Syracuse on March 22 and was officially named the coach on March 24. The sophomore guard has two years of eligibility remaining, and will likely be a focal point of McNamara’s first Syracuse team.

Doty is the Orange’s first incoming transfer of the offseason. So far, SU has reportedly lost guard Naithan George, Luke Fennell, Tyler Betsey and Tiefing Diawara to the transfer portal. With the portal officially opening Tuesday, more movement is expected.
