A Syracuse University student reported a burglary around 11:45 p.m. Friday night after returning home to an unknown person in their residence on the 1100 block of Madison Street, according to a Saturday campus wide email from SU’s Department of Public Safety.

The student reported seeing someone take several items before fleeing the residence. Another student was home at the time of the burglary, but no one was injured, according to the email.

The suspect was wearing a brown jacket and grey sweatpants when discovered by the student, according to the email.

The email reminded students of several steps to ensure safety and the protection of their personal belongings:

  • Always lock and secure your doors, even when you’re home.
  • Don’t prop or leave entry doors unsecured, including apartment and building entryways.
  • Keep valuables out of plain sight and store important items in a secure location.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity immediately.

DPS asks any witnesses to contact the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442 – 5222 or DPS at (315) – 443 – 2224. Students can also anonymously report non-emergency information using the Silent Witness tool or Orange Safe app.
