Syracuse men’s cross country dropped its first meet of the year by finishing second at the Princeton Meadows Challenge in Princeton, New Jersey, Saturday. SU’s women’s team finished fifth behind No. 10 Alabama, No. 19 North Carolina, Providence, and Duke.

While the men’s loss was disappointing, the women’s team put together its best performance of the year against five ranked squads.

Sophomore Keira Rogan continued her strong start to the season. After winning the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, Rogan was the Orange’s top finisher again, finishing seventh. Rogan shaved 17 seconds from her 6K time, crossing the line in 19:58.8.

Junior Jayden Harberts finished 26th (20:42.0), junior Carmen Luisi 27th (20:42.7), sophomore Gretta Johnson 41st (20:53.9), and junior Maisie Burns 53rd (21:05.6).

The men’s side finished second, failing to win an event for the first time this year. Syracuse notched 67 points, finishing behind No. 4 Alabama’s 42 points. Villanova placed third with 104 points.

Senior Benne Anderson led the way for the Orange with a third-place finish (23:11.2). With a mile to go, Anderson was in ninth place, but he rebounded and jumped up to third. Junior Ben Gableman finished 10th (23:26.3), followed by senior Connor Ackley in 13th (23:26.6), junior Connell Alford in 19th (23:33.6), and Louis Small (23:35.0) in 23rd.

Syracuse now has a few weekends off before it splits up for NCAA Pre-Nationals in Indiana and the Joe Handelman Princeton Fall Classic in Princeton.
