STAFF : Syracuse track and field teams finish in middle of pack at Big East championships

The Syracuse men’s and women’s track and field teams finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Big East championships in New York City last weekend. Georgetown took first place in the men’s competition, while Notre Dame prevailed in the women’s competition.

On the men’s side for Syracuse, Jarret Eaton and Amadou Gueye took first and fifth places in the 60-meter hurdles with times of 7.70 and 8.01 seconds, respectively.

Jaquan Holland took second place in the 200-meter dash and third place in the 60-meter dash. Jace Lowry and Martin Hehir finished third and fourth in the 5,000-meter run with times of 14:13.09 and 14:13.49, respectively. Frank Taylor won the long jump with a 7.44-meter leap.

Four Syracuse runners ran in the 3,000-meter run. Reed Kamyszek led the group with his 8:16.07 performance for 12th place.

For the women, Flings Owusu-Agyapong won the 60-meter dash in 7.46 seconds. She beat all other runners by .08 seconds and is still vying for an automatic qualifying time into the NCAA Indoor Championships. Lauren Penney finished third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:38.31.

Molly Malone placed second in the women’s 3,000-meter run, finishing in 2:48.58 in a group of four runners who crossed the finish line within seconds of each other.

Syracuse will race again March 3 in the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass., and the Columbia Last Chance meet in New York City.
