STAFF : Behind freshman Kempney’s offensive spark, Syracuse women’s lacrosse beats No. 6 Notre Dame

Syracuse continued to roll Thursday in South Bend, Ind., defeating Notre Dame16-10.

Michelle Tumolo put the third-ranked Orange (7-2, 2-0 Big East) on the board first 1:20 into regulation as SU ran out to a 5-2 lead over No. 6 ND (8-2, 2-2) in the opening nine minutes. The offensive onslaught continued as midfielder Katie Webster recorded a first-half hat trick and the Orange entered halftime with an 18-9 shooting advantage and a five-goal lead.

Freshman Kailah Kempney took over in the second half, scoring three of her game-high five scores. She sparked SU’s second 4-0 run of the game finding the back of the net off a Webster feed just 24 seconds into the second half.

ND responded with a 4-0 streak of their own, but it was too little too late. A Tumolo score with 4:35 left pushed the Syracuse lead back to six goals and eliminated an already desperate comeback attempt.

Kempney put the finishing touches on SU’s sixth straight victory-three coming over top 10 opponents-tallying her fifth and final goal with 15 seconds left.

She also continued her dominance in the faceoff circle, recording seven draw controls and propelling the Orange to an 18-9 edge overall.

Syracuse returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when Rutgers visits the Carrier Dome.
