Syracuse beats UConn 19-6, advances to Big East final against host Georgetown
Syracuse will play in the Big East tournament championship game for the second season in a row. The No. 5 Orange (15-3) beat No. 18 Connecticut (13-4) 19-6 on Thursday in Washington.
SU scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, but the Huskies answered with two goals in a span of 1:16 to knot the score at two. But after that, the Orange strung together a 6-0 run over seven minutes to pull ahead.
SU took an 11-4 advantage into halftime behind three goals from Kayla Treanor and a pair each from Alyssa Murray, Kelly Cross and Kailah Kempney.
A score by Devon Collins at the 19:05 mark capped a 4-1 SU run to open the second half and gave the Orange a double-digit lead.
Treanor led Syracuse with four goals and two assists. Murray finished with five points and notched one of SU’s three hat tricks – Kempney and Cross also netted three goals each.
The Orange’s ride turned in one of its best performances of the season. The Huskies only converted on 9-of-18 clear attempts and committed 25 turnovers. Defender Natalie Glanell picked up five ground balls and forced three turnovers.
Sophomore Kelsey Richardson spent the entirety of the first half guarding the cage and made three saves while recording the win. Alyssa Costantino replaced her in the second half and turned in a three-save performance while allowing just two goals.
Syracuse will play No. 2-seed Georgetown for the Big East title on Saturday at 1 p.m. Host GU beat Loyola (Md.) 16-14 on Thursday night.
