Treanor’s 7-point performance leads Syracuse to win over Georgetown, Big East tournament championship
No. 5 Syracuse (16-3) defeated No. 6 Georgetown (13-5) 14-7 in the championship game of the Big East women’s lacrosse tournament on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field in Washington, D.C. Kayla Treanor led the Orange with seven points on six goals and one assist and Kailah Kempney added three goals.
The Orange earned its third Big East tournament title in program history.
Georgetown, though, took an early lead. The Hoyas scored the only two goals of the game’s opening 12 minutes. Attack Dina Jackson scored just 69 seconds into the game to get the Hoyas on the board. Midfielder Hannah Franklin scored at the 21:39 mark to make it 2-0.
Syracuse responded four minutes later with two goals in a 49 second span. Devon Collins and Kailah Kempney scored at 17:27 and 16:38, respectively, to even the score at two.
Georgetown’s Ashley Hunter scored at 13:25 give the Hoyas a 3-2 advantage.
SU then scored the final four goals of the first half. Kelly Cross scored for the Orange at 11:41 to tie the score at three. Alyssa Murray then scored at 4:07 to regain the lead for the Orange at 4-3.
Attack Kayla Treanor, who set the SU record for most points by a freshman in SU history, scored twice in a minute to give Syracuse a 6-3 lead.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson had three saves in the first half. Alyssa Costantino came in to replace her in the second half.
Treanor completed her hat trick to open the second half, scoring on a free-position shot to make the score 7-3.
Georgetown scored its first goal in 20:25 on a Franklin free-position shot, cutting SU’s lead to 7-4
SU responded yet again, continuing what was a 9-1 scoring streak over 23 minutes. Katie Webster and Kempney scored two quick goals forty seconds apart to extend the Orange lead to 9-4. Treanor intercepted a pass on a Hoya clearing attempt and scored on an empty net to make it 10-4 with 19:29 to go.
Murray then scored for SU to extend the lead to 11-4 at 18:29.
Georgetown then made it 11-5 on a goal by Jackson.
SU responded with a Kempney goal sandwiched between two Treanor goals. It brought SU’s lead from 11-5 to 14-5.
Hoyas attack Meghan Farrell closed off the game with two straight goals with 6:33 and 1:30 left in the game.
The Orange defeated the Hoyas 13-7 in the last game of the regular season and added to that today, defeating them 14-7 in the Big East championship game. Costantino made four saves in the second half.
SU now awaits its draw for the NCAA tournament. The Final Four will be held May 24 and 26 in Philadelphia, Pa.
