STAFF : Syracuse builds comfortable lead, hangs on to beat RPI on Friday
After being swept Ohio State last week, the Syracuse women’s ice hockey team got back in the win column Friday night.
The Orange (6-9, 0-0 CHA) edged Rensselaer (3-10-4, 1-3-2 ECAC) 4-3 on the road Friday in front 145 fans thanks to an offensive outburst in the second period.
Trailing 1-0, SU evened the score 3:23 into the second period. Holly Carrie- Mattimoe received a feed from Caitlin Roach down low and banged it home to net her fourth goal in as many games.
Then halfway through the second period, Julie Knerr gave the Orange the lead, shooting the puck past Rensselaer goaltender Kelly O’Brien for a goal. Syracuse added to that advantage when Megan Skelly scored with 4:13 to go in the same period.
Syracuse kept attacking offensively, and Kallie Goodnough netted a goal 7:38 into the third period to make it four unanswered goals for Syracuse.
The Engineers didn’t give in, though, and cut the lead to one after Jordan Smelker and Andie Le Donne each scored in the game’s final four minutes. But RPI couldn’t find the back of the net for the equalizer.
SU goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater played a solid game, making 28 saves to get the win.
The two teams play again Saturday at 4 p.m.
