Syracuse University appointed Dean of Students Sheriah Dixon as its first Title VI Coordinator, according to a Friday release.
In her role, Dixon will ensure the university’s compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race and national origin in federally funded institutions, according to the release.
Her appointment comes before New York state’s November 2026 deadline requiring all higher education institutions to designate a Title VI coordinator. New York state is the first in the nation to mandate this position.
Dixon will continue to report to Senior Vice President and Chief Student Experience Officer Allen Groves.
“By appointing Sheriah Dixon as our Title VI coordinator now, we’re reinforcing that commitment and ensuring we have the most comprehensive infrastructure in place to address concerns promptly and effectively,” Groves said in the release.
Dixon will be responsible for processing Title VI reports, offering support to students, communicating procedures with the university and overseeing annual training for students, staff and faculty, among other duties, according to the release.
Dixon’s appointment is effective immediately, the release states.
