Former Syracuse men’s lacrosse midfielder/attack Casey Powell will become Le Moyne’s third head coach in program history, Syracuse.com first reported Thursday. Powell replaces Dan Sheehan, who won six Division III national titles in 29 seasons helming the Dolphins before becoming the school’s director of philanthropy.
Powell put together one of SU men’s lacrosse’s best careers from 1995-98. His 287 points rank third in school history. He wore Syracuse’s vaunted No. 22 and was its leading scorer during its 1995 national title season. Powell was a three-time first-team All-American and two-time Most Outstanding Player, becoming the only player in NCAA history to claim the honors at two positions.
The SU legend has since played for 11 teams across the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse and was a member of the United States Men’s National Team. His professional career began in 1998 when he was selected first overall in the NLL Draft by the Rochester Nighthawks. He continued playing professionally until 2016. Four years ago, Powell was inducted into the Professional Lacrosse Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.
This is the West Carthage, New York, native’s first head coaching job after serving as offensive coordinator at Jacksonville, an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland and a volunteer for Northwestern women’s lacrosse.
Powell joins a Le Moyne team that moved to Division I three years ago. The Dolphins are 16-25 since but qualified for the Northeast Conference Championships in 2025 after a 9-6 season.
