Syracuse University canceled in-person classes for the sixth time ever on Monday, according to a Sunday campus-wide email.

Only essential employees will be on campus, and classes will be held online. Goldstein Student Center, Barnes Center at The Arch, dining halls and Schine Student Center will remain open. However, Hendricks Chapel, the MakerSpace, Early Education and Child Care Center, the Bernice M. Wright School Campus and The Information Technology Services Help Desk will be closed. Transportation will run as normal, but delays are expected.

The last time SU canceled in-person classes because of snow was in February 2020, and it has only done so five times before.

A snowstorm and extreme cold hit central New York Sunday night into Monday. Syracuse is expected to get up to 18 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service. SU closed several buildings Sunday afternoon and evening as the snowstorm began. SUNY ESF also canceled in-person Monday classes, it announced on Friday.

The announcement, signed by Provost Lois Agnew, Chief Student Experience Officer Allen Groves and Interim Chief Human Resources Officer Alex Dietrich, comes after Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday.

Any additional updates to SU’s operating schedule will be sent via the SU WEATHER ALERT system.
