South Florida head men’s basketball coach Bryan Hodgson has reportedly turned down the head coaching job at Syracuse, The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman first reported Tuesday evening.
Hodgson had been floated as a major candidate to fill the Orange’s opening after head coach Adrian Autry was fired on March 10 after three years.
In his first season at USF, Hodgson guided the Bulls to an American Conference regular-season and Tournament title with a 25-8 record. South Florida is a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament, meeting No. 6 seed Louisville Thursday. Syracuse has gone five seasons without a March Madness berth.
During his successful debut season in Tampa — which followed a two-year stint at Arkansas State plus time as an assistant coach at Alabama and Buffalo — Hodgson’s name was murmured as a potential replacement for Syracuse.
He hails from Olean, New York, and grew up an Orange fan.
Goodman reported Hodgson will likely decide between Providence and staying at USF. The Bulls have reportedly put together a financial package to try to convince him to stay.
With Hodgson off the table, Syracuse may look to former player, coach and current Siena head coach Gerry McNamara as its next head coach. This season, McNamara guided the Saints to the NCAA Tournament in his second season in charge of the program. Siena is a No. 16 seed and will play No. 1 seed Duke in the first round Thursday.
Other potential replacements include UConn assistant coach Luke Murray; Mike Hopkins — former Syracuse player and longtime assistant coach under Jim Boeheim — and George Mason head coach Tony Skinn.
