Syracuse falls to Lindenwood, splits weekend series with Lions
Syracuse (4-7-7, 3-2-3 College Hockey America) lost 2-1 to Lindenwood (5-8-1, 4-3-1 CHA) Saturday afternoon, falling back into a tie for second place in the conference.
Syracuse outshot Lindenwood 33-21, but was unable to complete its third-period comeback. The Lions started off the game strong with a goal from Shara Jasper a little more than four minutes into the first period.
Lindenwood began the second period quickly as well. LU’s Brooke Peden got the puck past SU goalkeeper Jenn Gilligan less than a minute into the second period, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. The second period included two SU power play opportunities, but Lindenwood limited Syracuse to four shots in that time, keeping the Orange off the board.
Syracuse didn’t find the back of the net until the third period when freshman Stephanie Grossi scored her fifth goal of the season. Seniors Kaillie Goodnough and Julie Knerr assisted on the play. Syracuse recorded 12 other shots in that third period, but none found their mark and the comeback fell short.
Syracuse had the opportunity to move into sole possession of first place in the conference with a win Saturday. Instead, the loss means the team falls back into a tie for second with Lindenwood. Syracuse takes a break from conference play in its next game on Tuesday against Cornell at 7 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
