Syracuse struggles to defend power play in 6-2 loss at Cornell

Despite two goals from forward Melissa Piacentini, Syracuse (4-8-7, 3-2-3 College Hockey America) was blown out by Cornell (4-6-1, 3-2-0 ECAC), 6-2, on Tuesday night in Ithaca, New York.

After remaining scoreless for almost 17 minutes, the Orange and Big Red combined for four goals in the next 13 minutes.

Cornell opened the scoring on a Brianna Veerman goal eight seconds after Syracuse killed a penalty. The Big Red, though, would score twice on power plays.

CU outshot Syracuse 9-7 in the first period and struck again 22 seconds into the second. Again, Syracuse came off a power play 10 seconds into the period and Cornell scored just as SU returned to full strength.

With 12:30 left in the period, Cornell defender Sydney Smith was called for a trip and SU broke through on Piacentini’s first goal that made the score 2-1.

One goal was the closest the Orange would get as Cornell answered with three straight goals. Two minutes after the Orange goal, Big Red forward Hanna Bunton scored on a five-on-four advantage.

The third period saw scoring even quicker than the second as forward Emily Fulton made it 4-1 Cornell 16 seconds in. With 7:27 left in the game, Piacentini was called for interference and the Big Red struck again.

Piacentini returned from the penalty box and scored her second goal 16 seconds later with assist from forwards Stephanie Grossi and Alysha Burriss. Four minutes later, Bunton scored her second of the night to make it 6-2.

Cornell outshot SU 24-22 on the night while converting on 2-of-5 power-play opportunities. Syracuse was 1-of-4 when it had the advantage.
